Frequently Asked Questions
- Is a sod lawn less work?
- Yes, a professional sod lawn needs no special care because it is a healthy mature lawn when
installed, whereas a sprigged or seeded lawn requires years of nurturing to reach maturity. Sod
is grown under expert supervision from top quality seed blends. After it has been installed,
just water, mow, and fertilize your sod lawn as needed and it will remain a healthy, green carpet
of grass, requiring very little maintenance.
- Where can I use sod?
- Sod can be installed practically anywhere, even where seeding is impossible or too costly.
Sod is often used to stop soil erosion on slopes where rain would wash away both seed and soil.
- Can sod withstand heavy usage?
- Certainly! Sod establishes itself quickly. In a couple of weeks it is ready for full use.
Sod creates the perfect surface for lawn games and family outdoor living. With today's various
blends of hardy grasses, sod is chosen for parks, golf courses, athletic fields, as well as
residential homes and business parks.
- When can I install a sod lawn?
- Sod has revolutionized the lawn business! Now you can install a sod lawn anytime during the
year when the ground can be tilled. There is no need to wait for the right season to put in
your lawn.
- Is sod a good investment?
- Yes - it's the only way to go from bare soil, to lush green lawn in just hours. Yet, it's
relatively inexpensive to use. In the few hours it takes to install your sod lawn, your property
value increases significantly and even more in aesthetic value.
- How often should I water my new sod?
- Give your new lawn at least 1-2 inches of water daily. Watering twice daily is best for the
first two weeks. Watering should take place in early morning and late evening. Weather conditions
will dictate the amount and frequency of watering. Be certain that your new lawn has enough
moisture to survive hot, dry, or windy periods.
- How often should I fertilize my sod?
- It is recommended that Kentucky bluegrass be fertilized twice per year. Spring and fall are
best times for fertilizer applications. Apply a complete fertilizer to your lawn containing
equal parts of nitrogen, phosphate, and potassium. During summer, fertilizer rates should be
reduced by 50%. Always remember to water your lawn thoroughly after each fertilizer application.
- How soon after installation can my pets and children play on the sod?
- We recommend that all activity on top of your new sod lawn be kept to a minimum until the
sod has fully rooted down. After 2-3 weeks your sod should be firmly established and normal
activities can resume. Walking across new sod can pull apart the pieces and expose air gaps
along seems and those pieces could die. If you have to walk across newly installed sod, be sure
to visually inspect the area you walked across to make sure all seems are still tightly pushed
together and no gaps have formed.
- Will sod grow on sand or clay?
- It is not recommended to plant sod on top of a sand or clay base. Sand and clay do not
contain the proper nutrients that topsoil provides for strong root system development. Moisture
content is also a concern with sand and clay. Topsoil proves to be the best provider of moisture
retention, and vital nutrients that your sod needs to establish a healthy and strong root system.
If your yard contains sand or clay it is recommended that you put down 2-4 of quality top
soil before sod installation.
